ABOUT BELONG ELSEWHERE
Built from a Different Set of Questions

Moving abroad involves more than comparing visas and cost of living. For LGBTQ+ people and families, legal protections, safety, belonging, healthcare, affordability, and the practical path to residency can all shape whether a destination truly feels viable.

Founded by an LGBTQ+ couple who went through their own international relocation journey, Belong Elsewhere was created to make these questions easier to explore with research you can understand and compare.

WHY BELONG ELSEWHERE
It Was Personal
When we started talking about moving abroad, there was no shortage of information — visas, cost of living, where to go.If anything, we were overwhelmed.

But the questions that mattered most to us as an LGBTQ+ couple were much harder to answer. So began the 20+ open tabs. We had legal resources open in one tab to understand our rights, safety data in another, and surveys on acceptance and belonging somewhere else. To “unwind,” we were watching travel creators, reading Reddit threads, scrolling through Facebook groups, and looking for people who had actually made the move to hear what they had to say.

Then there was the practical side layered on top of all of that: What was healthcare like? Was there a realistic path to residency? Could we learn a new language?

While the information existed, the comparison didn’t. Belong Elsewhere grew out of that search. We wanted one place where the legal, the lived, and the practical could sit side by side — so people could compare destinations not just by whether they can move there, but by whether they could realistically build a life and feel at home there.

Every question behind the BE Index started with a question we asked ourselves first.
What it adds up to

Research Built for Comparison

More Than the Law
We look beyond legal protections to the things that shape everyday life — safety, belonging, healthcare, affordability, and the practical realities of moving somewhere new.
A CONSISTENT WAY TO COMPARE
Every country is assessed using the same research framework, evidence standards, and scoring process so the results can be compared consistently.
SAME EVIDENCE, YOUR PRIORITIES
The BE Index stays fixed.
My Matches uses the same evidence to reorder destinations around the priorities and household factors you choose — never changing a country’s published BE Score.

A FEW THINGS PEOPLE ASK US
Questions, Answered.
What is Belong Elsewhere?

Belong Elsewhere is an LGBTQ+-founded destination-intelligence platform for people thinking about life abroad. We bring research on legal protections, safety, belonging, healthcare, affordability, and relocation pathways together so it’s easier to understand how different destinations compare.

What is the BE Index?

The BE Index is our starting point for comparing destinations. It looks at six areas — Legal Protections, Safe Living, Belonging, Healthcare, Affordability, and Relocation Pathways — and gives each country a published BE Score from 0–100 using the same research and scoring framework.

What are My Matches?

My Matches uses the same research behind the BE Index, but lets your priorities and optional household factors shape the order of the countries you see. It gives you a personalized shortlist without changing any country’s published BE Score.

When will more countries be added to the BE Index?

We’re starting with 10 European countries, but the BE Index was built to grow. More countries are planned and will be added in carefully reviewed batches using the same research, scoring, and validation standards — so we’re always comparing apples to apples.

What else is Belong Elsewhere planning?

The BE Index and My Matches are only the beginning. We plan to expand to more countries, publish deeper destination research, and develop additional tools that help people move from simply exploring their options to understanding potential destinations in much greater depth.

Does Belong Elsewhere provide relocation or legal advice?

No. Belong Elsewhere is a research and comparison platform, not a relocation agency or advisory service. Our information can help you explore and compare destinations, but it isn’t legal, immigration, or financial advice. For decisions that require professional advice, you should consult an appropriately qualified professional.
